International Day of Forests

International Day of Forests

In 2012, FAO proclaimed March 21 as International Day of Forests, the goal of the day is to encourage nations to undertake local, national, and international commitments in organizing activities involving forests and trees and the theme for the 2022 edition is “Forests: sustainable production and consumption”.

In fact, the use of wood and forest products contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions by the society, also thanks to increasingly innovative and cutting-edge technologies that help obtaining functional and sustainable products.

However, forests are also a resource to be protected and managed wisely: since 1990, 420 million hectares of forests have been cut down. Therefore, the certification of sustainable forest management proves to be a precious and effective tool in helping to preserve forest resources while, at the same time, guaranteeing their use by civil society, which by choosing wood products from legal and sustainable sources can contribute in making the difference.

This is the reason why all DiCOmo suppliers are FSC / PEFC certified, to give all customers greater safety and peace of mind on the principles of correct forest management.

At this point one wonders what are these two acronyms, FSC and PEFC?

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council and is an organization made up of environmental and social groups (Greenpeace, WWF, Legambiente, Amnesty International, etc.), indigenous communities, forest owners, industries that work and trade wood, companies of the great organized distribution (Leroy Merlin, Castorama, Ikea, etc.), researchers and technicians, certification bodies, citizens and anyone who shares the objectives of the organization.

PEFC stands for Program for Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes and it is a body born as a voluntary initiative of the private sector and not for profit, which originated from a series of meetings of representatives of forest owners of some promoting countries (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Norway and Sweden).

Both bodies, therefore, have the objective of promoting sustainable management of the planet’s forest heritage through a voluntary and independent certification system, specific to the forest sector and products derived from forests.

For DiCOmo partner companies, that transform or market wood-derived products, it is therefore a credible tool to demonstrate their commitment to the correct use of the wood from which the raw material derives and helps them improve their corporate reputation and supply all the user guarantees the origins of the material used.

There is also a growing sensitivity on the part of public opinion to environmental sustainability issues that induces companies and public bodies to request “green” products and that sensitivity is also found in tenders or in the requests of some multinationals that require products certified according to FSC or PEFC standards.

DiCOmo and its partners, therefore, share the principles underlying these two organizations by committing to keep their standards high and aiming to be increasingly sustainable and green to do something good both to the planet and to people.
